Spatial and orbital planes of the Milky Way satellites: unusual but consistent with ΛCDM

چکیده

ABSTRACT We examine the spatial distribution and orbital pole correlations of satellites in a suite zoom-in high-resolution dissipationless simulations Milky Way (MW)-sized haloes. use measured to estimate incidence satellite configurations as flattened correlated their system MW. confirm that this is sensitive radial subhaloes thereby processes affect it, such artificial disruption due numerical effects central disc. Controlling for resolution bracketing disc, we find MW somewhat unusual (at ≈2–3σ level) but statistically consistent with Lambda cold dark matter model, general agreement results conclusions other recent studies.

Probing the Epoch of Reionization with Milky Way Satellites

While the connection between high-redshift star formation and the local universe has recently been used to understand the observed population of faint dwarf galaxies in the Milky Way (MW) halo, we explore how well these nearby objects can probe the epoch of first light. We construct a detailed, physically motivated model for the MW satellites based on the state-of-the-art Via Lactea II dark-mat...

The orbital poles of Milky Way satellite galaxies: a rotationally supported disc-of-satellites

Available proper motion measurements of Milky Way (MW) satellite galaxies are used to calculate their orbital poles and projected uncertainties. These are compared to a set of recent cold dark-matter (CDM) simulations, tailored specifically to solve the MW satellite problem. We show that the CDM satellite orbital poles are fully consistent with being drawn from a random distribution, while the ...

Chemical evolution of the Milky Way and its Satellites

1 How to model galactic chemical evolution Before going into the detailed chemical evolution history of the Milky Way and its satellites, it is necessary to understand how to model, in general, galactic chemical evolution. The basic ingredients to build a model of galactic chemical evolution can be summarized as : • Initial conditions; • Stellar birthrate function (the rate at which stars are f...

The Luminosity Function of the Milky Way Satellites

We quantify the algorithmic detectability of stellar Milky Way satellites in data release 5 (DR5) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), and use this to estimate the luminosity function of faint satellite galaxies in our halo. We develop a satellite detection algorithm based on the convolution of the DR5 star catalog with a kernel of zero net flux that is the difference of a narrow positive Ga...

On the common mass scale of the Milky Way satellites

We use a hybrid approach that combines high-resolution simulations of the formation of a Milky Way-like halo with a semi-analytic model of galaxy formation to study the mass content of dwarf galaxies in the concordance ΛCDM cosmology. We find that the mass within 600 pc of dark matter haloes hosting luminous satellites has a median value of ∼ 3.2× 10 M⊙ with very little object-to-object scatter...
